Review: Muri ‘The Sound’
Hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, Muri is creating wine alternatives in a way I've never seen before. Combining fruits and botanicals alongside Kefir to create a liquid full of complexity and intrigue.
I tried “The Sound”, an approximation of orange wine (white wine with skin contact) using apricots as the main body and supported with toasted hay and salted magnolia. Botanicals such as marigolds and pine needles are added as well as gooseberry juice for a base.
The aroma of apricot is first and foremost what I got when opening the bottle and upon pouring you met with a golden liquid that could easily fool the eye if put next to an orange wine. The nose felt flat to me, with the apricot being so dominant that all the other components seemed to be covered up.
My first sip was a pleasant surprise but again felt lacking when thinking about all of the other components advertised. The salted magnolia, marigold and Yunnan tea lend a light tannin that lingers towards the back of the mouth rather than coating and is the main mechanism getting me to reach for another sip. I was disappointed by the lack of acidity but at the same time pleased with the lack of sweetness. There is a distinct lack of balance which is unfortunate as alongside food it feels more like flavoured water as it just gets drowned.
Overall I think the product is doing something interesting and creative but falls short of the mark in the category and at £22 per bottle is unjustifiably expensive to buy again. If changes are made to the balance and the flavour profile readjusted I think they are on the right track to a winner.
